U’s Team Feared Red Kit Colour

Colchester United Communications and PR officer David Gregory last week claimed that the club’s playing staff became superstitious about warring last season’s red away shirt after they failed to win a single game in it.

During a commentary for BBC Radio Essex last week, Gregory said that the team were glad to see the back of that particular strip, evoking memories of other fabled tales involving team colours of times past. For the record, Colchester’s four away wins last season came when the team donned a changed strip of all white.

Gregory said: “ For the first couple of games [last season] when they didn’t quite go our way, sometimes the players straight away think, ‘oh, not that kit again!’”

The U’s, currently celebrating 70 years since their formation, will now ware a light blue top for games away from Layer Road until May next year.

“We’ve had good feedback from the lads about it, they quite liked it and a happy to ware it now they’ve got one good result in it”, added Gregory. He was referring to the new kit, worn for the first time during the opening-day draw, a 2-2 score, with Sheffield United.

Stockport County once also considered abandoning colours that resembled the Argentinean national team during the height of the Falklands War. Manchester United actually did so when, infamously, Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that their grey shirt brought bad luck after a string of poor results in the 1990s.
