Yeates: We Should Be Higher
Colchester United’s winger Mark Yeates, whose deflected goal during the recent one-all draw against Southampton secured the Essex side a point, has claimed that his club ought to be higher in the Championship table. The summer’s undeserved mantra, that stuck record from a number of fleeing stars about a lack of ambition, seems an altogether lazy charge now.
Yeates, who will have three goals to his name if adductors agree to credit him with Wednesday’s strike, explained: “We have a strong squad and are going to places like Southampton and giving these teams a really good game.”
The nippy Dubliner expanded his point by saying that manager Geriant Williams thought the U’s merited all three points. In yesterday’s EADT, he said: “We deserved the point. It was not a poached point, and after a quick chat with the gaffer, we agreed we’re frustrated that we didn’t nick all three.”
Yeates concluded that Colchester are not currently over-performing, despite the statistics showing them as the highest scoring team in the Championship.
He said: “We need to turn all those draws in to wins. We’re playing well but I feel that we should be even further up the league.”
