Colchester United continue to be linked with former stars who might make sensational returns to Essex, and the latest is Chris Barker, the left back who joined QRP last summer.
There had also been speculation that Neil Danns may make a shock comeback after his heroics during the Phil Parkinson promotion era, but he yesterday competed a move to the U`s Championship rivals Crystal Palace.
The link with Barker, who spent last season on loan at Layer Road, seems more credible because Colchester are in search of a new full-back and the defender was left out of the Hoops starting line-up last weekend.
QRP`s recent injection of cash, with a defensive re-shuffle that also includes new signings Fitz Hall and former U`s loanee Matthew Connolly, could mean Barker facing an uphill battle for a starting birth, especially in light of a stunningly ambitious claim from owner Flavio Briatore that they intend to reach the Champions League within four years.
A loan move would be most likely in the event of any deal, but Barker is greatly respected at Layer Road and the U`s twice tried to sign him before London club Rangers completed his signature from Cardiff. He was a key part of the U's side that almost made it into the play-offs during thier first Championship season last term.
Colchester are in search of a player in his position following a recent rebuff from target Daniel Fox, who went to Coventry City after failing to agree personal terms.
The club are also resigned to the possibility of losing George Elokobi, following his transfer request earlier in the season.
