Game of Two Halves

Colchester returned to the midlands to face for the second time in two weeks a team that was playing their football in the Premiership last season, the U`s faced West Brom at the Hawthorns chasing their first points of the season.

Starting brightly the U`s forced a corner within the first 15 seconds after a long ball which was flicked on by Iwelumo for Cureton to win a corner off of Steve Watson.

West Brom failed to make sustained pressure pay off, forcing 5 corners in quick succession, seeing a shot from Hartson cleared off the line and Ellington watched as Davison Tipped over.

In what seemed to be a harsh decision from referee Mr. Taylor, Wayne Brown was adjudged to have bought down John Hartson in the box awarding the Home team what seemed a soft penalty after the initial tussle was outside. Nathan Ellington stepped up to take the resulting penalty, stroking the ball low and to the left of Aidan Davison putting the home team in front on 10 minutes.

Albion continued to dominate, although Richard Garcia went close at the other hand with a half volley, he could only watch as Greening cleared for a corner. The resulting corner saw Iwelumo head over the bar.

Albion continued to pour forward, piling on the pressure forcing the U`s back into their own 18 yard area. Every time the U`s cleared the ball, it kept coming back and back again, the U`s rarely managed to get out of their own half with Albion camped inside it. Indeed the home side were awarded a free kick only for Davison to tip the ball round the post for yet another corner.

There was no surprise when the home side doubled their advantage on 41mins with Wallwork stroking home after great play from a cross from Steve Watson.

Jamie Cureton went close for the U`s on 45mins attempting a curling shot which narrowly went wide.

With West Brom having 60% of the play in the first half and forcing 14 corners the U`s cannot complain about the half time score, indeed they were lucky not to be further behind with Albion striking the post twice and Aidan Davison making 3 good saves.

Half Time:

West Bromwich Albion 2 - Colchester United 0

Colchester came out in the second half determined not to be out done, catching the home team on the break twice in quick succession with Zuberbuhler saving from Izzet and Garcia Blazing over from the resulting rebound.

Indeed the team from North Essex continued to press looking for something from the game with Jamie Cureton looking particularly impressive, pressing the West Brom defence and forcing an early mistake.

However Colchester had to be on their guard with the Nathan Ellington going close and looking for his second goal of the game, only for Aidan Davison to save well low down.

In complete comparison to the first half Colchester looked like a different side then the one that had gone in at half time 2 Goals down, Kevin Watson went close only to see his shot go just wide, and Wayne Brown headed wide brushing the post from a corner.

Home Manager Bryan Robson seeing Colchester coming more into the game made two defensive changes replacing Zoltan Gera with Darren Carter on 62 Mins and bringing on midfielder Richard Chaplow for Goal scorer Nathan Ellington on 64.

With 15 minutes left on the clock Cureton making a nuisance of himself forced the home defence into conceding a corner which Colchester`s Garry Richards headed towards goal only for the ball to deflect off of a defenders knee for another corner.

Robson making his 3rd defensive substitution replaced Ronnie Wallwork with Martin Albrechsten on 77mins.

With only Eight minutes to go and seeing his side pushing for something out of the game, Geriant Williams introduced Pat Baldwin who replaced Garry Richards and Kemal Izzet was replaced by 19 Year old striker Jamie Guy.

Guy who had been on loan last season to Conference side Cambridge United scored with his first touch within 30 seconds of coming on setting up a grandstand finish. This was no less then the U`s deserved for their outstanding play in the second half.

With time running out Guy was intent on making a further mark on the game, along with fellow strikers Iwelumo and Cureton they searced for the equalising goal.

Indeed their constant attacks on the Home Goal resulted in the winning of two corners in the last 20 second of the 3mins of stoppage time, only for Wayne Brown to head wide.
