Sept 16th 3pm
Colchester United earned their third victory in the last four games, at the expense of basement club QPR at Layer Road this afternoon. The U`s were on fire in the first half as they put their opponents to the sword early on with goals from Chris Iwelumo and Richard Garcia.
Iwelumo scored the opener from 12 yards after only nine minutes, and Garcia doubled the U'sadvantage as he hit a magnificent volley to beat Jake Cole in the visitor`s goal and to put Geraint Williams' men 2-0 up by the 18th minute.
The U's started at home where they had left off some 14 days earlier against Derby County and should really have been out of sight before the interval, such was their dominance. Kemal Izzet stands out in particular for praise; the central midfielder gave his opposite numbers no time to control the ball, compressing the space that Bircham and his fellow midfielders had available to them.
Jamie Cureton and Karl Duguid were keen to get in on the act both watching their shots sail over the crossbar. With the home side in complete control, QPR rarely threatened, and on the odd occasion they managed to find their way in the U`s half, the defence looked more than capable of dealing with everything that was thrown at them.
Colchester deserved to go in at the interval in front and should have been further ahead by the time the referee blew his whistle.
The home crowd could be forgiven if they expected the same in the second period, however Rangers had other ideas, with the introduction of Adam Czerkas for Ray Jones, Gary Waddock looked to fill the gaps in the Rangers Midfield. The tactic seemed to work as the skilful Czerkas looked to be the spark that Rangers had missed in the first half.
Dean Gerken deputising for the injured Aidan Davison, was called into action early on saving from Marc Nygaard. Lee Cook also watched a shot go wide in what was a busy 2/3 minutes for the Rangers attack.
Whilst at the other end Iwelumo was caught off side a number of times along with former Rangers front man and strike partner Jamie Cureton, as the U`s looked to turn around their opponents with quick long high balls.
Marc Bircham was soon cautioned for a late challenge on Watson, whilst Colchester Manager Geriant Williams handed Kevin Mcleod his home debut bringing him onto replace goalscorer Richard Garcia.
Rangers collected a lifeline as Wayne Brown was unlucky to head into his own net after Marc Nygaard lobbed the ball over the advancing Dean Gerken, setting up a nervous finale.
However the U`s held on to record their third win in four games collecting 10 points from a possible 12 hauling themselves up to 16th after their first 8 games of the Championship.
