Colchester's bowed out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at the second round stage on Tuesday night, eventually losing a penalty shootout against out league 1 rivals Gillingham at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

A classic encounter, which looked to be going our way for large periods was eventually saved in the dying minutes to see the 90-minutes end in a 3-3 draw, meaning a penalty shootout was required to determine the winners.

Gillingham were the eventual victors as they held their nerve to advance....

Things started well for us as when we took the lead when Drey Wright (17) fired into the top corner from 25-yards to break the deadlock. Ideally a lead had to be held a little longer but when Ben Dickenson (24) got onto Joe Martin's pass he made no mistake to level it up at the midway stage.

Callum Davies' foul on Cardiff City loanee Rhys Healey brought us a penalty shortly before the break, which Sanchez Watt (38) stepped up for to restore the lead.

Gillingham were again level though just 10-minutes into the second half Jermaine McGlashan's run and cross was converted by Bradley Dack (55) to make it two-two. The visitors, with just over 15-minutes to go, then took the lead when Antonio German (74) made it three-two.

Destined to bow out in 90-minutes, debutant Elliott Hewitt crossed to substitute Freddie Sears (87) to send the game to a penalty shootout after the three-three draw.

The hero of this was Gillingham 'keeper Stuart Nelson, not only did he save George Moncur and Tom Eastman's penalties he only then stepped up to score the decisive one himself! His spot kick put Gillingham into the third round 4-2.
