The U's 1-2 Port Vale
Weston Homes Community Stadium
Only a third defeat since the appointment of our new boss came on Saturday against a side that had official confirmed the appointment of their own new fulltime boss when Port Vale beat us.
We literally 'paid the penalty' with a missed spot kick the difference between a point and nothing in the 2-1 defeat at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.
Freddie Sears, who is very much in-form this season, almost scored early.
Our 'keeper Sam Walker, who is also is such good form this season, saved well to deny Ben Williamson giving Port Vale the lead with Mark Marshall hitting the post soon after.
Port Vale 'keeper Chris Neal saved well from Gavin Massey, with the best chance of all coming Colchester's way when Richard Duffy brought down Massey in the area for a penalty.
Sears stepped up but Neal saved well to keep out his spot kick, with Marshall (56) making him pay for this when he converted Adam Yates' cross shortly after the interval.
Four-minutes Colin Daniel (60), who had come off the bench just a minute earlier, converted after Marshall turned provider.
The frame of the goal denied us when Massey went close to reducing the deficit.
Freddie Sears (79) did that to make it two-one with 12-minutes to play, finishing Macauley Bonne's header across goal from Sanchez Watt's cross.
An equaliser couldn't be found though.
