Colchester 2-2 Blackpool & Highlights

Colchester
2 - 2

Attendance: 4,438

Referee:

The 2015/16 season got underway for Colchester, as it did the remainder of League 1 at the weekend, with this starting in draw with Blackpool at the Weston Homes Community Stadium on Saturday.

Colchester twice had to come from behind to secure a two-two draw with the Tangerines, who are still looking for a first competitive win in seven-months!

Blackpool were ahead for the first time when Cullen (18) scored on his debut but this lead last just a few minutes before U's vice captain Gilbey (22) volleyed home to make it one-one.

Cullen (45) added his second, and left himself on for a hat-trick, when he restored the visiting sides lead in first half injury-time.

The U's weren't going to be denied though with Massey setting up former Ipswich, Charlton and Newcastle, midfielder, Ambrose (56) to mark his arrival with a debut goal and equalising goal with him almost winning it late on too but Tony Humes' side had to be content with a draw in the end.

The other results this weekend were as follows:-

Burton 2-1 Scunthorpe
Chesterfield 3-1 Barnsley
Colchester 2-2 Blackpool
Coventry 2-0 Wigan
Crewe 0-0 Port Vale
Doncaster 1-1 Bury
Fleetwood 1-1 Southend
Gillingham 4-0 Sheff Utd
Rochdale 2-0 Peterborough
Shrewsbury 1-2 Millwall
Swindon 4-1 Bradford
Walsall 1-1 Oldham

In the opening round of fixtures you can't really read too much, if anything into this, and things aren't likely to settle down for several weeks if not months and only around the end of the year, at best, can you gage more from the table really, correct? It goes without saying the U's will be looking to be higher up this table than down it though!

Looking at these results the ones that stand out are Chesterfield's, Gillingham's and Swindon's wins.

Barnsley are fancied by many to do well whereas the Spireites, having lost manager Paul Cook to Portsmouth and several key players, are being tipped by some to struggle but Chesterfield gained an impressive three-one win at the Proact Stadium with Swindon's all-changed squad ripping into Phil Parkinson's Bradford, seeing off the FA Cup finalists from last season four-one at the County Ground!

Arguably the result of the weekend, certainly in League 1, has to be Justin Edinburgh's Gillingham side thrashing one of the hot favourites for the title, let alone promotion, Sheffield United four-nil at Priestfield in Nigel Adkins' first match in charge of the Blades.

Colchester are back in action this midweek with the 1st round of the Capital One Cup taking place.

Steve Clarke's Championship side Reading will be the opponents, the FA Cup semi finalists from last season aren't going to relish the visit to the WHCS to take on the U's who could sense a cup upset!
