Fan Q & A: U's -vs- Leeds - Take Two!
Q: Second faces third. Unbeaten, but you`ve got to lose sometime, right?
Sadly, that seems to have been the case in the past. Most Leeds fans believed we had the squad to get promoted for the past three years running, but something has always gone wrong; can't help but feel something similar will happen this season - hopefully it won't start on Saturday!
Q: You were the first club to help fill the ground last season but our fans during the home game say you were treated better than they in their own ground. What do you make of any "double standards" comments?
They are probably right to be honest... I suppose it probably comes down to respect...without trying to offend, you guys were probably seen as an easy three points that day,(although that didn't prove to be the case) so you're wellbeing probably wasn't first on the agenda...
Q: Jermaine Beckford has been in fine form again this season. But wasn`t he supposed to be leaving?
Sort of, but not really...
You would imagine that there would be alot of speculation around a striker that has just scored 30-plus goals and finishes his contract at the end of next season, so that was almost a given.
At times, there were a few worrying stories in the media about trade deals with Sheffield United and Newcastle, but there were so many after a while it became easy to dismiss most of them. I suppose Ken Bates thought it better to use him as an asset to get into the Championship than to sell him for £2/3 million.
Q: What is the average response of any fan when a Colchester supporter just to happens to mention the 1971 F.A. Cup win by their then Four Division side?
They would probably ignore that statement - then point out who won the cup the year after!
Q: Simon Grayson. A former player turned manager. But is he the right choice to get you promoted?
Simon Grayson is quite simply one of the best managers in England at this time...
In his first job with Blackpool, he took them from bottom of League One to the Championship in a season and has not failed to impress here during his time with us.
He is a great tactician with a great eye for bringing in good (cheap) players. He also seems to be able to get the best out of his players - this showed with our second half of last season (not including the playoffs!)
Q: Just where did it all go wrong under Gary McAlister?
I think most fans would be in agreement that he tried to play football that was too pretty.
He wanted us to win well, almost like Brian Clough once did, but he never seemed to be able to get a good string of wins together, mainly since our squad couldn't win even a sloppy, dirty game.
He had problems winning away from home, as did Dennis Wise, and our defence was terrible for leaking in stupid goals that costing vital points.
Q: Describe your team in three words.
Strong, defensive + Beckford.
Q: Which Colchester player would you most like to take off our hands, if possible, on a free?
Honestly, nobody. Now that Dean Hammond has gone, I think anyone else would just be wasting their time on the bench!
Q: Who should we look out for at the weekend? I would say Beckford but he never seems to play well away from home, saying that he is always a threat on goal.
Higgs, our keeper, will be tough to beat as well as Kisnorbo, the CB.
Snodgrass on the right-wing will be called up to Scotland soon enough on current form and I would say and Doyle and Howson in the centre can be very threatening.
Becchio also is a great player with a brilliant work-ethic and is somewhat a cult hero.
Q: Not the Usual - predict a score...?
Like I said, believe we have the better squad but something could definitely go wrong, as it always seems to at some point during the season, so.. 0-0!
