Having A Word! POTM December

A return for one of our relic features from the Vital vault - our player of the month.

We've selected U`s midfielder, Anthony Wordsworth, as the most outstanding member of the team for December 2009. The agreed choice will appear for debate based on player match-performances between now and the rest of the season.

1. Anthony Wordsworth (5 appearances, 3 goals)

2. Phil Ifil (5 appearances, 2 goals)

3. Magnus Okuonghae (5 appearances, 0 goals)

The Vital Verdict: Having come in for criticism from some quarters of the Colchester support following his selection earlier in the season, the attacking player enjoyed an upturn in form at the close of December, scoring three goals in as many games to sign off his contribution for the year.

He has showed now that he is capable of finishing well as well as putting in hard-graft from the middle of the park.

Wordsworth is a style of midfielder manager Aidy Boothroyd has admitted he likes and should be dearer to the U`s faithful since he graduated from the youth side. Long may it continue!

Runners-up:

Ifil: Outcast thanks to a combination of Paul Lambert`s previously controversial management style and some very poor form, the wing-back has reinvented himself on the wing and even weighed in with two goals as during the festive period. His hard-hit finish against Brighton was the player`s first goal as a professional.

It will be intriguing to see, as Ifil aims for a contract extension, if he keeps his place when the injured Ashley Vincent eventually returns.

Okuonghae: Selected here on the basis of his seasonal performance, if not monthly contribution. The young defender has inherited the captain`s armband with aplomb his season and developed into something of a cult figure.

Top stuff from Woody! Wasn't playing well prior to the month but has looked very good and scored with some tidy finishes! Ifil and the BEAST as usual have been great! Up the U's!
