2011 - Late Drama From Gilly

2011 - Late Drama From Gilly
Two late goals from substitute Steven Gillespie ensured that the U's picked up all three points in front of the Sky cameras two years ago this evening.

The game, which was Eddie Howe's final match in charge of Bournemouth in his first spell prior to leaving for Burnley, saw the U's climb up to seventh in the table, level on points with Charlton Athletic who held the final play-off spot.

The match was also significant for the stand-out performance of debutant, Ben Coker, who slotted in perfectly at left-back and showed no signs of nerves in front of the cameras having returned from a loan spell at Chelmsford City.

The U's went into the match on a run of four games without victory and, thanks to 54th-minute opener from Steve Fletcher, that run looked set to continue, dampening the U's play-off hopes further still.

However, following his introduction for Ashley Vincent in the 64th-minute, Steven Gillespie made a game-changing impact, scoring in both the 77th and 84th-minutes to turn the game on its head and secure a valuable three points for John Ward's men.

Kayode Odejayi went close to doubling the U's advantage late on before pulling his shot wide of the goal.

Other Notable Events Today:

1992 - The U's win 3-2 away at Kingstonian in the FA Trophy; eventually going on to become winners.
1997 - A run of five consecutive draws is stopped with a 2-1 win over table-topping Fulham at Layer Road.
2006 - Two late goals from Chris Iwelumo and Neil Danns give the U's a ninth win in eleven to climb to fourth in the League One table.
