2006 - U's March To The Top

A Chris Iwelumo header on the stroke of half-time sent Phil Parkinson's U's side to the top of League One seven years ago this evening, as they beat Scunthorpe 1-0 to mark a run of ten straight victories in all competitions.

Quite astonishingly, the U's had lost just once in their past twenty-three outings, and the victory over Scunthorpe was the twentieth time in that spell that Parky's men had tasted that winning feeling - an incredible run that I feel unlikely to see repeated in my days of watching the U's!

Having dispatched Bradford City 3-1 at Layer Road just three days previously, Brian Laws brought his side to Essex on a Tuesday night in front of four-and-a-half-thousand at Layer Road, with the momentum starting to bring back some of the crowds.

It didn't look like going to plan initially, though, as the Iron dominated first half proceedings and were unfortunate not to take the lead themselves, with the potent front line of Billy Sharp and Andy Keogh denied by the U's back line.

Just as the board went up to indicate first half stoppage time, a trademark long throw from Greg Halford met the head of Chris Iwelumo at the Layer Road End to alter the half-time team talks and send the home crowd into delirium.

The second half wasn't much better for the U's, with Cleveland Taylor causing all sorts of problems down the right hand side as Parky's hosts held on for another vital three points in a game that could so easily have gone the other way.

Alas, the full-time whistle came with the U's 1-0 lead still in tact, and match-winner Iwelumo would jump over the Barside wall and join the crowd in celebration at Parky's side going top of the division.

Other Notable Events Today:

2004 - A goal by Enoch Showunmi is enough for Luton to beat the U's 1-0 at Kenilworth Road, with Thomas Pinault making his 100th Football League start.
